Facts

Danish consumers are the most organic in the world
Every Dane spends approx. €106 each year on organic foods, making Danish consumers the most organic in the world. In 2007, sales of organic product rose by 33 per cent, and in 2008 by 29 per cent.

The most popular organic products are outmeal, milk and eggs. Thus, 36 per cent of all outmeal, 35 percent of all milk sales and 26 per cent of all egg sales in Denmark are organic.

By comparison, consumption per consumer in Switzerland is €105, Austria €89 and Germany €64.

In 2008, Danish discount stores, supermarkets and department stores sold DKK 4.6 billion of organic food products.

The majority of organic food products are sold to Danish consumers via supermarkets, discount stores, department stores and discount department stores. Thus in the first 6 month of 2009 only 10.6 per cent of overall organic sales were through alternative sales channels, including farm stores, subscription programmes, market place sales and health food stores, and 3.7 per cent through other sales channels.
With a market share of 33.1 per cent of the total organic sales in Denmark, supermarkets comprise the sales channel in which the most organic products are sold.
