| 2009-02-09 | | | | The sale of organic agricultural products in European shops has become so great that organic agricultural production is now to be included in agricultural production statistics.
Previously the volume of organic products sold in European shops was too small to be registered and included in European agricultural production statistics. However, the organic product market share has grown to such a size that changes are now being recommended.
It is the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture that has made a recommendation to the EU Commission to include organic agricultural production in agricultural production statistics. “Organic produce has captured a substantial market share, which is constantly growing. We need statistics for the market development of organic agricultural products to see how much it represents in the overall picture,” says Bruno Sander Nielsen, senior consultant at the Danish Agricultural Council.
As the only country in the EU, Denmark has already begun to gather organic agricultural production statistics. The proposal from the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture is so new that at the moment it is impossible to predict when common gathering of statistical data will come into force.
