Danes stick to organic foods despite financial crisis
Despite the financial crisis, Danes continue to buy organic products. An article today in the Danish national newspaper Jyllands Posten reports that, despite more price-consciousness and increased turnover at discount supermarkets, sales of organic products remain at the 2008 record level.

“Organic products have performed relatively better than other food products, and in fact better than we had expected. Organic sales at Coop Danmark remain at last year's level, and 2008 was an impressive record year," said Katrine Milman, Environmental Manager at Coop Danmark to Jyllands Posten.

6.5 percent of food products sold at Coop Danmark’s supermarkets are organic.

Consumers give priority to quality and health
Over the past five years, sales of organic foods has almost doubled. In 2008, turnover increased 29 percent relative to the previous year. The sales figures reveal that consumers prefer natural and healthy foods and continue to demonstrate a willingness to pay extra for them.

“It’s a pleasure to note that organics seem to be sailing through the most serious financial crisis since the 1930s. During the economic downturn, it appears that food quality and health remain priorities for the Danish people”, said Henrik Hindborg, Market Manager in Økologisk Landsforening (Danish National Organic Association) to Jyllands Posten.

However, even though there are no signs of a fall in organic sales, organic products are affected by the supermarket price war, which finds the supermarkets battling for customers. Prices are under pressure and food producers are being paid less for their products.
