| 2008-09-11 | | | | The Danes have long been dedicated consumers and important producers of organic foods. What is new is that the country has now also taken the lead in organics research. The new international research institute, ICROFS, opened its doors in June 2008.
Previously, global research cooperation concerning organics has not had the attention it deserves, and this is why Denmark is focusing on organics research. Some of the challenges that Denmark faces are also being faced by other countries, and the purpose of ICROFS is to carry out research that benefits our environment. Patron of the institute is the Danish "Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries", and the Minister Eva Kjer Hansen sees great potential here:
"With the establishing of ICROFS as an open and international research institute, it is my ambition that Denmark should become a pioneer in increased international cooperation in organics research. Through the sharing of knowledge and cooperation spanning across borders and continents, together we can get a lot more out of the respective research budgets. Conserving production offers interesting perspectives with respect to the sustainable production of food and adaptation to climate change. Therefore, in my opinion, stronger international cooperation in research seems to offer a good foundation for the development of the organic contribution to the mastering of current and global challenges", she says.
The focus of Denmark on organics research shows that we are conscious of our responsibility as "Country of the Year" at Biofach 2009. ICROFS will play an important role in the global organics branch.
