Large growth in global sales of organic products
Global sales of organic products increased by 10 percent in 2008 and, following twelve months of falling prices for organic products, 2010 is forecast to be a period with stable prices and continuing growth.

In 2008 global sales of organic products increased by 10 percent. Continued growth and stable prices are predicted in 2010. These messages come from specialist research and consulting company Organic Monitor, which released the latest figures for global organic development at the world’s largest organic trade fair, ‘BioFach 2010’.

The financial crisis made its mark on the global market in 2009 bringing a fall in the price of organic products. However, Organic Monitor forecasts that 2010 will be a period with stable prices and continuing growth. According to Henrik Hindborg, Market Manager in Organic Denmark (Danish National Organic Association), growth will come from state-of-the-art organic products that not only carry the red Ø inspection label but which also have special qualities related to refinement and taste:

“The impetus for growth in Denmark is a marked desire to develop high-quality products that give consumers a real experience of added value, including exotic sorts, high-quality taste and additional health-giving characteristics”. This is also evident at BioFach. Organic producers are setting new standards for the foods sector generally and this fact did not go unnoticed by the international guests.

And positive signals that international growth is continuing, are apparently also mirrored on the Danish market. The latest reports from COOP and Arla indicate that organics are growing once again. The COOP chain, which accounts for just over half of total sales of organic food products in Denmark, reports 11 percent growth in total organic sales in the last quarter (November, December and January). During the same period, Arla registered a 7 percent increase in the demand for organic milk, relative to the same period last year.

Joint Scandinavian export campaign at BioFach

This week Organic Denmarkis spearheading this year’s joint Scandinavian export campaign at BioFach 2010. Twenty-five Danish companies are participating on the Scandinavian stand which has a total of 47 exhibitors. The focus point of the stand is a Scandinavian kitchen and lounge. Here three star chefs de cuisine, Jesper Witt Paustian, Paul Svensson and Kim Palhus from Denmark, Sweden and Finland, respectively – prepare unique and delicious Scandinavian dishes for visitors, using products and ingredients that the companies themselves are presenting at the trade fair. The aim of the joint initiative is to strengthen the identity of Scandinavian countries individually as part of a common Scandinavian region.
